Build and Deploy a Custom Facebook App for your Group
Any officer of a Facebook Group can build a custom MedCommons Facebook app that adds group-specific content and branding to the standard app. It's a great way to get an instant Social Networking Presence.
Step 1 - Planning
You'll need to pick a name for your group's app, organize your branding graphics, decide on special links and other customizations. It is simplest to name your app the same as the group. So if you choose MySpecial Group as your name, you will end up with
http://apps.facebook.com/MySpecialGroup
as your Facebook url. You will also see that the relavant entries in your Activity Log are labeled with MySpecialGroup
Step 2 - Setup Facebook Developer Keys and Parameters
You will interact with Facebook in order to reserve a name and space for your auto-generated facebook application. You will be given some keys and other information for use in Step 4
- You need a Facebook Account. You can get one here
- Test the standard MedCommons app
- Add the Facebook Developers App. Don't worry, it is harmless
- Hit the setup new application button and choose a name for your app. You may be suprised by this, but your name will not necessarily be unique throughout facebook
- Go to the edit settings paged and edit the developer and user support emails to your liking.
- Change the TOS URL to your group's Terms of Service. Change your application icon if you like.
- The Canvas Page URL must be negotiated as you will see that some names are already taken. Do the best you can, but you will be letting this out into the wild Internet under the url as indicated above and will need to keep it active
- Check Yes to 'Can your application be added to Facebook?'
- Check Users as answer to 'Who can add your application...'
- Set the Privacy URL to a privacy statement for your application
This is almost setup, and will be finished in Step 5. Keep the Facebook Deveoper Window open
Step 3 - Setup MedCommons Appliance Keys and Parameters
You will interact with a MedCommons Appliance in order to reserve a name and space for your auto-generated facebook application. If possible you should use the same name in Steps 2 and 3.
- Contact the owner of the MedCommons Appliance and ask her to add your Application. A standard form for this is available here
- Obtain the keys from the owner (who obtained then from her appliance console) and keep them for step 4
Step 4 - Generate Your Facebook Application
Enter all the various keys, names, values, images, and other branding into the form at the bottom of this page. You will be given a facebook callback url for your facebook application. The url is arbitrary, but you wont be able to call the url without the correct keys
Step 5 - Finish Facebook Application Setup
Go back to the Facebook Developer page for your application and set the facebook callback url as returned in step 4. Also set this same url into Side Nav URL
Step 6 - Test Your Facebook Application
Confirm that your application is working. Try comparing your applications behavior against the standard app.
Step 7 - Notify Your Group
When you are happy with your app and your group, you should notify your friends and group members:
- go to your group page and use the notify members link to tell them all about it
- invite your friends to your group using the invite link on the group page
- send emails to invite your non-facebook colleagues to join your group and benefit from your app
Custom App Generation Form
Generate Your Facebook App Right Here. You'll have 24 hours to complete the installation and testing process, or your application will be automatically deleted
You will be given a Facebook Canvas and Side Nav URL for use in Step 5
